<p>I can remember my first weekly grammar test for my journalism course at university. I made this mistake too and my lecturer Sally White,  wrote &#8220;Sally sitting down because Sally feels ill&#8221; and she drew a little picture of her sitting in a chair with head stooped.</p>
<p>I have never forgotten the proper use of its and it&#8217;s again.</p>
<p>An easy way I would tell the kids I taught was to think whether they would say, &#8220;the dog wags it is (it&#8217;s) tail&#8221; or &#8220;the dog wags its tail&#8221;.</p>

The sight of a word missing a possessive apostrophe or the misuse of loose and lose, it&#8217;s and its and their/there/they&#8217;re makes me wonder what is taught in schools.
